Contexte et historique
Morgan dollars en argent sont l'une des séries les plus populaires de pièces de monnaie des États-Unis parmi les collectionneurs. La pièce est nommée d'après son concepteur, George T. Morgan. Ils ont été frappés chaque année de 1878 à 1904 et relancé en 1921 pour une seule année.
Initialement, la pièce a été créée au profit des sociétés minières d'argent lorsque le Congrès a adopté la loi Bland-Allison qui dictait efficacement le nombre de pièces produites chaque mois.
La loi gonflait artificiellement le prix de l'argent pour satisfaire les intérêts miniers. Des centaines de millions de ces pièces ne sont jamais entrées en circulation et ont été stockées dans des sacs en tissu contenant 1000 pièces chacune. Le département du Trésor a ensuite stocké les sacs dans les coffres du gouvernement.
En 1918, un total de 270 232 722 pièces ont été fondues, mais de nombreuses pièces sont restées dans les coffres du gouvernement pendant des décennies. Bien que la monnaie ait produit des pièces de preuve dans certaines années, toutes les pièces qui ont un contraste de camée ne sont pas considérées comme des pièces de preuve. Les pièces qui ont une finition Deep Mirror Proof-Like (DMPL) ont été faites pour la circulation. Beaucoup de pièces de monnaie en circulation ne valent que leur valeur d'investissement . Cependant, certains dollars de Morgan sont très précieux .

Le dollar Morgan argent a été frappé les installations de la Monnaie américaine à Philadelphie, Denver, San Francisco, la Nouvelle-Orléans, Carson City. Toutes les installations de fabrication de monnaie ne fabriquaient pas de pièces chaque année d'émission.
